Managing the Physical Layer
Every large network undergoes hundreds or thousands of moves, adds and changes (MACs). Inevitably record keeping and tracking is never 100%accurate. Often a switch port is patched through a link which goes through to an outlet where there is no equipment connected- or perhaps there is a PC or printer which hasn't seen traffic for over three months. Does this sound familiar? It is so common that it has a name- ‘Phantom utilisation’- and in a study by Gartner Research, they discovered that it can be as high as 40% of total apparent utilisation.

PLM SCHEMATIC
A network manager needs to keep methodical logs of moves, adds and changes (MACs) in order to run an efficient network. In high-availability networks such as Data centres, immediate fault detection and trouble shooting play a crucial role. PLM Solution systems provide such benefits as cutting management cost, improving physical network security, and tracking assets.
The PLM solution can trace all devices connected to the network; take care of mapping and documentation of the physical infrastructure; monitor all connections and events; log, report, alarm and alert for all changes in assets and physical layer connections and/or disconnections; extend network management to include layer-one; and extend asset management in layer-one.
TrueNet PLM solution is a combination of scanners, expanders, and masters deployed in a hierarchical configuration. Each scanner supports to up to 24 intelligent patch panels to monitor and report connectivity information. Expanders allow a virtually unlimited number of scanners to be controlled by the system, while the master views the entire system and reports to the Enterprise (PV4E) software that resides on a server.
