Cat 6A is now Ratified

In February, the International Standard Organisation approved the much anticipated ISO 11801:2002 Amendment 1 for Class EA (Category 6A), as well as Class FA (shielded Category 7A). The document defines the requirements for Channels for 10GBASE-T applications in data centres and LANs and is expected to be published in the late March or early April 2008.

The ISO requirements for Permanent Link and Components (ISO 11801:2002 Amendment 2) are expected to be ratified in 2009.

The American Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), in February 2008, approved all their requirements for Category 6A Channel, Permanent Link and Components for 10GBASE-T in their cabling standard TIA-568-B.2-10.

TrueNet® CopperTen meets Cat 6A

ADC KRONE’s TrueNet CopperTen portfolio meets the demanding requirements of both these new ISO and TIA documents with an additional benefit of A 20 year product warranty. Available in unshielded and shielded solutions, the end-to-end system of patch panels, termination blocks, patch cords, modular sockets and cable feature patent-pending design elements that minimise alien crosstalk and insertion loss.

It’s been a challenging time for both the standards organisation and the cabling industry to achieve the ratification of Cat 6A. The first big step forward was in 2003 when ADC KRONE developed its unique CopperTen UTP cable and demonstrated its effectiveness to the IEEE 802.3an Committee. This provided the impetus for the IEEE Committee to set achievable performance objectives and for other cabling vendors to follow our lead.

Even though there is room for rationalisation and harmonisation between ISO and TIA cable performance requirements. TIA has lead with ratification of the full range of performance requirements (Channel, Permanent Link and Components) but ISO have ratified Channel only at this stage. It is expected when ISO ratify its Permanent Link and Component requirements then the TIA will align its performance to the ISO numbers.
