Welcome NoteBy the time this issue hits you, India would have turned to become the 2nd largest wireless market in the world after China and still growing at an incredible pace of adding close to 8 Mio subscribers every month. I recollect in 1991, our teledensity was just about 1% and it is now 25 times over. India stands as a shining example where technology adoption & deployment has been rapid. Talking of technology, India along with China is expected to be a dominant market for FTTX by the year 2013 as we are sure to add large numbers of fixed access lines using mostly fibre technology. Ever increasing demand for bandwidth is pushing Broadband service providers to start looking beyond wireless and DSL technologies to meet the high speed data requirements and also be prepared for a range of applications such as High Definition TV, Video on demand etc. With the data transfer speed limitations of Wireless and transmission limitations of copper lines, types of services that can be offered over broadband are limited. Optical fibre as a medium has many advantages over copper. Higher bandwidth over longer distances, immunity to electromagnetic interference, smaller size and low weight making it easy to handle, makes Optical fibre to be the ideal option for broadband connectivity compared to copper. FTTH (Fibre to the Home) solution is a core competence of ADC KRONE who has been a leading player within the US market. Leveraging on this global strength we have begun addressing the Indian market in this area and we therefore believe it is pertinent to dwell on this subject in detail. Beginning this issue we will cover this subject in a series of articles to reach to all those network planners & managers involved in designing Next Generation Networks, of which FTTX is a key element. Protection of networks against over-voltage & current is an important subject often overlooked in India. With increasing DSL deployments, the condition and protection of the local loop becomes all the more critical. Read about this in this issue. Green is now a global colour! Experts from around the world are discussing benefits of green IT and looking for helpful tips on how IT infrastructure can make an important contribution to the environment by reducing energy consumption. Data centres provide you with ample opportunity to commence your green initiatives. Read about how cabling solutions can help your Data Centre turn greener. Happy reading! Bala Chandran
